Drinking Your Way Around the World

used to be that when people go to their stupendously expensive European vacation, they did so for the high culture, fabulous food, classy wine, and old world charm. traditional cuisine in the United States at the time consisted of hamburgers, hot dogs, casseroles, and later, the pizza of dubious quality. France and Italy in particular are known for their kitchen. Those wealthy enough to return from their trip along the Riviera and wax poetic about the culinary delights enjoyed there. food consumed during the trip was a sign of true sophistication.

the world is shrinking these days, and often you can get an amazing selection of food (all shapes, sizes and species), and inevitably some of it will be good enough and exotic enough to negate the need for travel exclusively for food. This is especially true if you live in a major metropolitan area with a large immigrant population. Gone are the days when you could just get a real croissants in France, and when you could just get a real bagel in New York City (although the latter is still controversial in my mind .)

Alcohol is, however, still comes in myriad flavors, varieties and forms, with different levels of potency. Still there are certain types you can only get in other countries. Until very recently the only real absinthe had to be smuggled illegally from the Czech Republic. If you factor in the local moonshine, the fact that I can get only in some countries, in certain places, it becomes especially true. As it turns out, most companies have a special, traditional strange way to get drunk. That is why I enjoy the three lists, travel show once the Mojo, which is now picked up a new network (Fine Living, I think .)
